Lithuania is a Baltic country but although it lies on a body of water
the climate is dictated to by the European landmass rather than the influence
of the Sea, which means that warm summers have their counterpart in long
(very) cold winters. Unless you really want to find out why "Baltic" has
become slang for "extremely cold" you are best advised to avoid visiting
the countryside between November to March - although admittedly the landscape
is particularly beautiful when frozen and snow-covered. Vilnius is probably
the only place worth visiting in the winter, when you can take excursions
from the relatively comfortable surroundings of the city.
From the spring until late summer the rest of the country is more welcoming
to visitors. Temperatures hardly reach uncomfortable levels, at the
height of summer you will be greeted with extremely pleasant weather; more so
the countryside looks beautiful under clear blue skies. July and
August are the warmest but also the wettest months, and you should take
a waterproof coat when you visit. Probably the best time to
go is around May and early June, when the countryside is beginning
to blossom, rainfall is relatively low and temperatures are comfortable.
